A bit of history before I share my experience:
Do you know that Sikri as a village was first founded by Babar. Akbar came here to visit Sufi Saint Salim Chisti. Saint told Akbar that he will soon have son and it happened as expected. Akbar named his son after saint Salim and promised to build a town there known as Sikri. This town was later known as Fatherpur Sikri after Akbar defeated the rulers of Gujarat and renamed it a city of victory.
It was one of the beautiful cities in the world but the grand compound was restricted in 1585, due to scarcity of water. Akbar then shifted to Lahore before moving back Agra in 1598.
Below are two pics showing Diwan-i-Aam and Akbar’s architectural designs.
My experience to the haunted city Fatehpur Sikri:
Local guys’ money making tricks:
As we entered the city, we couldn’t wait to see the grand entrance of Palace. But before we could move ahead some local guys stopped us 4-5 Kms before the palace saying that you have to park your vehicle here or you cannot move ahead. Hire a taxi or Auto Rickshaw from here or walk.
Our experience helped us and we immediately said we are going to the railway station and not to the palace. They allowed us. We went ahead.
As we moved some kms ahead some more guys just jumped in front of our car and asked to hire them as guide. They told us if we hire them as a guide, cops will allow the car to go up to the palace or you have to walk all the way to the top or hire an Auto rickshaw.
We were left with no option and we hired one. He told cop that we are his guest so allow them to come along with me. He agreed and all was set.
Important Places to watch in Fatehpur Sikri:
1) Buland Darwaza – Main entrance to the city
2) Jama Masjid – It’s a Mosque decorated with white Marble
3) Tomb of saint Salim
4) Diwan–i-Aam – Hall of public audience
5) Diwan-i-Khas – Hall of private audience
6) Nine jewels of Akbar court
7) Birbal Bhawan, his court advisor
8) Jodha bai residential place
9) Harem of Akbar’s wives
10) Anup Talao – It is here the famous court musician Tansen played music.
It was very interesting to know the history behind the historical palace Fathehpur Sikri. The place is very beautiful with lots of historical knowledge. The most interesting part was jodha Bai’s residential area.
Jodha Bai’s Palace:
Take a ticket, hold on your cameras and click it. It is a very beautiful place with grand entrance in Rajasthani style. This is the only place in the in the palace having temple. There were two sides to the palace. One was used during winter season and the other during summers which was facing towards artificial lake. Watch out the video below to see how the palace looks.
Why it is among top 10 ghost towns? I was not able to find the answer to this question. But many people say it’s a Ghost town.
